Green Car Strapped To a Yellow Flatbed Tow Truck

If you’re a gearhead like we are here at Bliss Towing Service in Houston, you’ve probably wondered why the tow trucks you see on the highways look different.  It probably won’t surprise you that these differences all serve a different function for the towing services that use them.

And similar to consumer cars and trucks, tow trucks aren’t all developed in the same manner. They vary in shapes, sizes as well as features. Here are 4 different types of tow modern trucks that we use and a little bit on their use and purpose in our industry.

Flatbed Tow Trucks

This has to be the most widespread and common tow truck. It comes with a long empty bed at its top. The bed moves downwards and upwards with the help of hydraulic systems. Flatbed tow trucks offer convenience since you just have to drive your car up the ramp. Alternatively, it can be pulled onto the ramp.

Flatbed tow trucks come in handy when transporting vehicles that have been involved in accidents or have a roadside problem. You can even transport boats on these trucks. They offer both convenience and safety.

Integrated Tow Trucks

These trucks offer more specialty. They are used for heavy-duty towing. Integrated tow trucks come with extra axles. These provide them with extra strength and stability enabling them to tow buses and other rigs.

Hook And Chain Tow Trucks

These tow trucks offer versatility when it comes to towing. They can handle a variety of cargo. They are becoming less common as years pass, though. Intense pressure is usually applied to the tow truck when transporting cargo.

Chains that are wrapped may end up damaging your towed car. This tow truck is recommended for the transportation of damaged or wrecked cars. It poses challenges when towing 4×4 and all-wheel drives. It may seriously damage your drivetrain.

Hook and chain tow trucks are the best towing trucks for your wrecked vehicle. If you have a vehicle that is completely damaged, the chains won’t do any severe damage to it. Additional damage to the bumper wouldn’t matter anyway for a car that’s completely wrecked.

Wheel-Lift Tow Trucks

Hook and chain tow trucks and these tow trucks share similar mechanisms. Instead of the chains used by hook and chain tow trucks, these trucks use a metal yoke. Less damage occurs to your vehicle when you go for a wheel-lift tow truck.

The hooking of the metal yoke happens in the front or rear wheels of your car. The front or rear side of your car is suspended using a hydraulic lift or a pneumatic hoist. The vehicle is then lifted from the ground for it to be pulled away. The entrance wheels are used for pulling front-wheel-drive cars. Wheel-lift tow trucks don’t offer the safety and protection of flatbed tow trucks. Nonetheless, they’re comparatively inexpensive.

Well, there you have it!  Tow trucks come in different designs and configurations for reasons. There are those that are made for heavy-duty towing, medium-duty towing, and light-duty towing. Some trucks offer safety while others are more convenient.
